Beauty and the Beast (1987) was a fantasy ‘modern’ New York retelling of the classic fairy tale… Beauty and the Beast. (Go Figure that one?) Now before we start we are going to give some ground rules… laid out here.
- THERE WILL BE SPOILERS
- I don’t own any of the images attached to this blog post
- These are all my feelings, because I’m an emotional woman. I need to release my feelings.
- We are positive about this. So if you comment. NICE things only.
- Oh… and there will be spoilers (you were warned)
We have two main characters…
Other awesome characters are Joe, Father, Mary, Mouse, Diana*. (* More on her later)
I decided this would be an awesome show to pick with my siblings. I don’t know how I feel about that in the final long run. My brothers (17 & 15) decided to make one thousand + cat jokes about our dear Vincent.
As our lovely Manic Episodes explains this show is “Lady Porn”
^ Watch her video if you want to stop reading all my thoughts. She says a lot of good information, especially on the third season
This show was crazy with the feelings you received. In season one, all you hope for is the kiss. Back in the ’80s, they believed it would come off as Beastiality. Which… I’ve done my research, the meaning of that word does not apply.
So you wait and wait, then they give you barely a touch of a kiss, in some strange silhouette-type thing. The build-up with that kind of letdown disappointed me. There were tears shed… because I’m a bit of a melt-down kind of gal.
I don’t recall seeing these actors in anything I watched in the past. But I got attached quickly to these characters and the story. Regardless of what other’s say, the slower pace was comforting, while the soundtrack was amazing.
Which even had me listening to the Love and Hope that Ron Pearlman recorded in his ‘Vincent’ voice.
Now if anyone knows me well enough, they know I’m obsessed with this trope. I am a huge fan of the Broadway hit ‘The Phantom of the Opera’
I also have read at least ten different re-tellings of Beauty and the Beast, and have seen quite a few of the TV-produced shows and films.
I’m also writing 2-3 different renditions myself. One heavily inspired by this show is called ‘A Secret Love’ which I’m writing as we speak.
We were introduced through the show to a tradition called Winterfest, while watching the show and without looking for it, I came across a group of people throwing their own.
I had to sign up and I hadn’t even finished the TV show, I just needed people that (sadly beyond my family) enjoyed the show.

Season two of the show also gave me a lot of feelings. I hoped with how the last season had ended we would get more romance.
But… we went back to their iconic, almost kiss.
Except for when we got a soft and chaste kiss come episode twelve: Orphans. Which was one of my favourites.
But with season 2 they give us more in-depth stories about the World Below.
But than… there was season three.
This broke me! I cried (even though I had pre-spoiled it for myself. FOR THESE REASONS) I knew it was going to happen.
I am not mad at Linda Hamilton. If I had a baby, damn sure as well I would keep that baby and spend all my time with it. So my anger is not with her.
But their way of killing her off… was depressing. Manic Episodes (linked previously above) mentioned it perfectly, how they did it was sad. Keeping her away from Vincent all those times.
I had a mind to write some letters to the writers of this show.
I seriously was going too. Instead, I wrote a blog to express my feelings, for the internet to read anytime they’d like. Ha-Ha!
Maybe…. hear me out…
What if they did something like this.
Then the writers choose her to die. In a pathetic way… but they could have made a movie like ended it with season 2 then added a two-hour movie (oh wait we already did an almost 2-hour finale episode/premiere of S3)
Catharine could help him from his troubles, keep the amnesia thing, because it’s important. Add a fade-to-black or chemise/lace-covered scene, keep the pregnancy. But her STRUGGLE, the drama could be the what if’s. What if she had to decide? Living with her son and the world below. Would she want to keep working? What would happen if Joe found out? Would he finally out his feelings?
There were so many possibilities.
But nope.
Now season three had some good shit though – except the intro change. Like I get it, she is gone, but I want my INTRO!!!
“This is where the wealthy and the powerful rule. It is her world… a world apart from mine. Her name… is Catherine. From the moment I saw her, she captured my heart with her beauty, her warmth, and her courage. I knew then, as I know now, she would change my life… forever.”
-Vincent Intro
“He comes from a secret place, far below the city streets, hiding his face from strangers, safe from hate and harm. He brought me there to save my life… and now, wherever I go, he is with me, in spirit. For we have a bond stronger than friendship or love. And although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart.”
-Catharine Intro
Diana was awesome. Loved her as a character. (NOT AS A REPLACEMENT TO CATHARINE)
I just wanted Diana to end up with Joe. But… he was given less screen time still and welp… never happened.
Then… the whole MARY and JACOB (Father)
Don’t get me started on that.
Overall, it was a good show. It just needed help.
Get me a time machine, ASAP! I need to fix it! I can offer my romantic TV experience and make the world a better place.
Call me if anyone knows someone who does time machine work?
